A salad seems like a natural make – just wash, dress, and toss – but sometimes the salads we find at airports can be less than appealing. I’ve seen salads that are wilted, full of condensation and overall just nasty looking. So we were surprised (and pleased) to see that the salads of Aroma Espresso Bar were far from the typical airport salad.
On our way to New York through Billy Bishop Airport, Melina and I passed by the newly opened Aroma, and each grabbed a salad and a steaming hot skim latte (which you’re not allowed to take through security, so we had to gulp down quickly).
Already suspicious of airport salads, I wondered how horrible they might be. Did they have fresh, crisp greens or wet, soggy lettuce? Did the salad just have one piece of chicken? Had the tomatoes fallen to the bottom of the container, leaving a pool of juice for the other veggies?

Daniel Davidzon, the Marketing and Communications manager at Aroma Espresso Bar, told us that they “prepare each salad fresh every morning and that salads are never reused the following day.” Well, we sure hope not!
A good salad has a variety of ingredients and complexity to it with flavor and most importantly, should taste and look fresh – even at the airport.
The following are the salads of Aroma that you can grab at Billy Bishop Airport.

I had the Tuna Salad, and the lettuce was not soggy, there was plenty of tuna, and the tomatoes were not cut but whole (Davidzon said this was part of their airport salad strategy – use whole cherry tomatoes, so they don’t leak all over the other vegetables).
Melina tried the Sweet Potato & Lentil Salad and couldn’t stop raving about it. The sweet potato was delicious, and there was just the right amount of goat cheese and everything else – it was a winner.
RECOMMENDED: Get healthy with airport farm to table foods
We feel that the two salads we tried had a variety of pieces that were bite-sized, easy to travel with (we took our salads post-security) and had lots of flavors. Each bite contained more than one ingredient, and that just made it taste better. No one wants enormous pieces that you can’t bite into!
Overall, the salads were excellent. If you’re looking for a healthy option at Billy Bishop, the salads of Aroma Espresso Bar will do the trick.
